WCAG 2.2 AA — Quick Checklist

A plain-language pass over the checks that matter most. A starting point for your own review — not a substitute for hands-on testing with assistive technology.

Perceivable 1

  • Every meaningful image, icon, and chart has a text alternative; decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
  • Video has captions, and audio/video has a transcript or description where needed.
  • Structure lives in the markup — headings, lists, labels, and tables — not in visual styling alone.
  • Colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
  • Text contrast is at least 4.5:1 (3:1 for large text); icons and UI components at least 3:1.
  • Text resizes to 200% and reflows to a single column at 320px with no loss of content or horizontal scroll.
  • Increased line and letter spacing don't clip or overlap content.
  • Content shown on hover or focus can be dismissed and stays put while you read it.

Operable 2

  • Everything works with a keyboard alone, with no focus traps.
  • A skip link lets keyboard users bypass repeated navigation.
  • Each page has a unique, descriptive title and a logical focus order.
  • Link text and headings make sense on their own.
  • The keyboard focus indicator is always visible.
  • Focused elements aren't hidden behind sticky headers or overlays.new in 2.2
  • Anything done by dragging has a simple single-tap alternative.new in 2.2
  • Clickable targets are at least 24×24px, or spaced far enough apart.new in 2.2
  • Nothing flashes more than three times per second.

Understandable 3

  • The page language is set, and any language changes are marked.
  • Components behave predictably — focus or typing doesn't trigger surprise changes.
  • Navigation and naming stay consistent across pages.
  • Help, like contact details, appears in a consistent place on every page.new in 2.2
  • Form fields have visible labels and clear instructions.
  • Errors are described in text, with guidance on how to fix them.
  • Users aren't made to re-enter information they already gave in the same process.new in 2.2
  • Logging in doesn't depend on memorising or transcribing a puzzle.new in 2.2

Robust 4

  • Markup parses reliably and every id on the page is unique.
  • Custom components expose the right name, role, and value to assistive technology.
  • Status messages (e.g. "added to cart," "search returned 5 results") are announced without moving focus.

What's new in WCAG 2.2

Version 2.2 added six criteria you'll see tagged above: Focus Not Obscured, Dragging Movements, Target Size (Minimum), Consistent Help, Redundant Entry, and Accessible Authentication. If you last tested against 2.1, these are the gaps worth re-checking first.
